Preparation
For the best quality of the diagnosis, you will receive a copy of preparation instructions before the examination. The preparation instructions are also available below:
Evening before the Test
- You must fast overnight the evening before your test. Do not eat or drink anything after 12 midnight the night before the test.
- Refrain from tobacco use during the fasting period.
- Discontinue the use of the medications list attached.
The Day of the Test
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke anything in the morning before going to our office. The Smart Pill test will include a small meal that will be provided to you at the doctor’s office.
- If you are a diabetic, take one half of your morning insulin dose, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
Discontinuation of Medications prior to Motility Pill Test
48 hours before the test:
- Motility altering medication: Cisapride, domperidone, metoclopramide (Reglan)
- Macrolides (e.g. erythromycin, Azithromycin)
- 5HT4 partial agonist (e.g. Zelnorm, antiemetics, anticholinergics (e.g. Phenergan, Compazine)
- 5HT3 antagonists (e.g. Zofran, Kytril)
7 days before the test:
- Medications which may alter gastric pH
- Proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole (Prilosec), Pantoprazole (Protonix), lansprazole and esomeprazole (Nexium)
2 days before the test.
- Histamine-2 blockers such as cimetidine (Tagamet HB), famotidine (Pepcid AC), and ranitidine hydrochloride (Zantac 75)
1 day before the test.
- Antacids (e.g. Maalox, Mylanta, and Rolaids)
- Insulin-dependent diabetic patients should take ½ of their normal dose of insulin and monitor glose levels according to normal routines.
