SmartPill capsule is an ingestible medical device that enables physicians to exam the motility of your gastrointestinal tract by the capsule traveling through the intestines by normal rhythmic contraction of the intestinal muscles. As the capsule is traveling through your intestines it is collecting data and sending the information to a data receiver worn around your neck or on a belt clip. This diagnostic testing is used for detecting temperature, pH, pressure, gastric emptying time, and bowel transit time.

Complications are rare. However, a potential risk includes retention of the capsule. Early signs of capsule retention include fever, trouble swallowing, chest or abdominal pain, and nausea.
